Flexicare wins Medical and Life Sciences award

The 20th October marked the prestigious Insider, Made in Wales Award. The evening proved to be a celebration of some of the best designing and manufacturing companies in Wales. Nominated within several categories, Flexicare was awarded winner of the Medical and Life Sciences category for the biggest impact between 2010 and 2011. The judges praised the development and commercialisation of Hall Lock, in overcoming the risks associated with wrong route drug administration highlighted by the NPSA.

Product Manager Thomas Jenkins said “we were delighted to accept the prestigious Insider award, and we shall remain focused on continuing to develop innovative medical products to improve patient safety.” Speaking at the Insider event, Gareth Davies, General Manager, commented that The Hall Lock project had been “developed through excellent working relationships with clinicians in Wales, representing a truly Welsh solution to a very global problem”.

The development of the concept has raised Flexicare’s commercial profile not only as a leading manufacturer of respiratory and urology devices, but also as a leading innovator, with Hall Lock put forward for consideration as part of a new draft ISO standard. Thomas Jenkins added “Flexicare is driven by our committed and experienced employees, together with the close relationships forged with doctors throughout Wales. We are certain that Hall Lock will not only lead the way in raising the standards of patient care but will reaffirm our position as a leading Welsh manufacturer”.

NICNICE supports cost saving Inditherm

Inditherm Medical are providing NHS Hospitals with a solution to warming more patients whilst making enormous cost savings.

NICE have recently issued guidance that supports the use of Inditherm patient warming systems for patients undergoing operations which carry a risk of inadvertent hypothermia.

NICE concluded that the effectiveness of the Inditherm patient warming mattress in maintaining patient core temperature is similar to forced air warming (FAW). The NICE committee also estimated that the average NHS cost saving from using Inditherm is in the region of £9,800 per operating theatre each year. This could save the NHS in England alone well over £15 million if FAW was replaced by Inditherm’s mattress for eligible procedures* in most of the 3,030 operating theatres in England.

For more information go to www.inditherm.com/medical or www.nice.org.uk/guidance/MTG7

*Eligible procedures are those where a patient is under anaesthetic for more than 30 minutes.
